Teenage Mike can hardly believe his luck as his self-confident neighbor Kelsey agrees to go on a date with him—or rather: asks him to pick her up. Dude, where to get a car now? Some crook is quick to foist a rusty piece of junk on him for very little money which, unfortunately, various highly eccentric criminals are after as well. First Date, the feature debut of director duo Manuel Crosby and Darren Knapp, is a warm, loveable teen romance transmogrified into a high-octane thriller comedy zipping through suburbia, swerving somewhere between blue balls and bullet hails—guaranteed to be one of the best date movies of the year.

Crosby, Manuel & Darren Knapp are two NorCal cinephiles who are a generation apart but both grew up in Valley Springs. They met at Calaveras County Public Access TV during Manuel’s college summer vacation. Making films together with mutual friends ever since, they have served as writer, director, cinematographer, editor, and producer. Prior to First Date, which premiered at Sundance, their collaborations included the shorts Broadcast, Dead Man’s Locket, and the feature-length western Livin’ by the Gun (d. James Miller).
