To get her insomnia in check, the fishmonger’s daughter Polina chugs some magic tea given to her by a strange old woman. From now on, Polina meanders in a waking dream through a Fantasia of Tsarist Russia—brought to life by director Uldus Bakhtiozina with extravagant sets and eccentric costumes. Tzarevna Scaling is a dazzling, aesthetically inventive avant-pop fairy tale that blends old grandeur with nouveau-riche insipidness, conjuring and, at the same time, attacking a mythically exaggerated Russia of yesteryear.

Uldus Bakhtiozina
Bakhtiozina, Uldus comes from a family of mixed religions and nationalities, expressing her background through her artistic work as a photographer, costume and make-up designer, and now also as a screenwriter and director. Born in 1986, she has degrees in Politics and Graphic Design from the West-North Academy of Public Administration in Saint Petersburg and the University of Arts, London. Named one of BBC’s 100 Women 2014, she was the first Russian speaker in the history of TED Conferences and is a member of the Royal Society of Arts, London. Working with institutions like the Royal Opera House, Fabergé Museum, or Tretyakovskaya Gallery, Uldus calls her style “Tatar Baroque.”
